What enterprise knowledge work is made of

To understand why AI can compress organizations, it helps to decompose knowledge work. Much enterprise activity exists because reality is represented imperfectly and because large groups must continuously reconcile those representations.

  • Analog-world interpretation: observing objects, people, machines, events and ambiguous conditions.
  • Forced digital representations: forms, PDFs, emails, documents and manually maintained records that imitate paper-era workflows.
  • Compounded human/system error: transcription, interpretation, versioning and handoff errors across the chain.
  • Coordination overhead: approvals, meetings, status reporting, reconciliation, compliance and management required to align many actors.

Reality → interpretation → document → entry → reinterpretation → reconciliation → approval → audit

AI can automate each step, but automating the existing chain may preserve machinery that no longer needs to exist. The more fundamental opportunity is to ask which state transitions can be represented directly.
