The capital-flow inversion
The paper is not fundamentally a thesis about economic contraction. AI can release enormous resources from structures that existed because intelligence, coordination and verification were expensive.
Suppose an outcome requires $100 of resources today and $35 after transformation.
$100 old cost → $35 new cost + $65 released capacity
The $65 can become lower prices, additional output, wages elsewhere, investment, new enterprises, public goods, consumer surplus or leisure. The destination is an allocation problem, not an AI-provider entitlement.
This produces the central inversion:
AI may be worth less as a rent-extracting industry precisely because it is worth more as a technology for releasing capital from friction.
The employment inversion adds another layer: AI may redistribute not only income after production but the capability to organize production. De-productization adds a third: users can increasingly generate capabilities they previously rented. Process compilation adds a fourth: mature automation can require less general intelligence to operate.
Value inversion + capital inversion + employment inversion + product inversion
These mechanisms all move in the same direction: they separate productive usefulness from durable private scarcity.
Capital release can dissolve the accumulator's advantage
Capital release changes not only the amount spent on a process but who can organize production. When the required invested-capital base falls, cumulative capital loses force as an entry barrier even if the remaining projects earn high ROIC.
Incumbent economic profit = invested capital × (ROIC − WACC)
Entry barrier = current capital required for a sufficient substitute, not incumbent capital accumulated historically
The inversion is therefore sharper than ROIC fade. High returns can persist while access to those returns spreads across smaller firms, customers and new entrants. The rent is no longer protected by the original accumulator unless it owns the bottleneck to which scarcity has migrated.
