Open-source agents and the commodity floor
Open-source AI coding agents illustrate the pressure mechanism even without assuming that current tools are sufficient to replace commercial software. The important economic fact is that an innovation can become a shared baseline from which many actors begin.
Innovation → open implementation → shared baseline → specialization → higher commodity floor
A company that spends years creating an agent may still possess distribution, brand, hosted infrastructure, proprietary models or enterprise trust. But the code and patterns that become public reduce the amount a new entrant must independently invent.
AI itself accelerates the process because contributors can understand, modify and combine large codebases more cheaply. The commodity floor can therefore chase the frontier upward.
This is a direct challenge to valuation based on accumulated implementation. Historical work remains socially useful, but its private scarcity can decay rapidly when competitors start from the existing frontier rather than from zero.
